The pencil drawing The Beauty of Transience IA is part of a pair of drawings associated with the Parallel Cycles series. Across the two sheets, an old woman’s hand and a leaf are placed side by side, creating a dialogue between the forms of the human body and nature.
The delicate tonal variations of graphite reveal the traces of time in both motifs. The folds of the skin and the veins of the leaf, their damage, missing areas and irregular contours echo one another. Their resemblance emerges not as a direct transformation, but as a subtle visual connection between the two forms.
In nature, passing away marks the beginning of another transformation. Both the ageing body and the plant form beginning to decay hold the beauty of time lived. The pair draws attention to this shared fragility and to the cycle of which we, too, are a part.
The large areas of untouched paper create silence and space around the two motifs. Displayed side by side, the works reveal the parallel between human and natural forms most clearly, which is why they are sold together as a pair.
