Still Life on Maternity Leave III. brings the viewer’s gaze down to floor level. A dropped dummy lies in the foreground, while furniture legs and an orange sofa rise behind it. From this height, the familiar domestic interior becomes a spacious and unfamiliar landscape.
The Perspectives of Maternity series grew out of my experiences during the years when my child was young. As a mother, I spent a great deal of time sitting on the floor, playing or watching my child. From there, the proportions of our home appeared different: the floor became a vast surface to explore, while the furniture defined the space like architectural structures.
The composition’s strong perspective lines draw the eye into the depth of the painting, while the tiny green dummy becomes the focal point among the large pieces of furniture. Its fresh green enlivens the warm brown, yellow and orange surfaces. Black outlines and simplified forms evoke the world of children’s toys.
This seemingly insignificant object becomes a symbol of a formative chapter in life. The painting explores the everyday reality of motherhood from within, through a changed perspective in which the adult’s attention gradually adapts to the child’s world.
This is an original, one-of-a-kind oil painting, signed and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
