Maternity Still Life I. depicts a teddy bear and a toy duck from an unusually close, low viewpoint, looking upwards. Familiar objects from a child’s everyday surroundings take on an almost monumental scale, while the space adults know so well is reshaped by new proportions and points of emphasis.
The Perspectives of Maternity series grew out of my experiences during the years when my child was young.
A vivid yellow-green background appears behind the solid forms of the brownish teddy bear and the colourful toy duck. Thick black outlines, simplified shapes and distinct areas of colour evoke the immediate, lively world of children’s toys. Meanwhile, the visible brushstrokes of the oil paint give the composition a tactile quality and a subtle sense of movement across its surface.
The painting approaches these objects beyond the conventions of a traditional still life. It preserves the imprint of a transitional chapter in life, during which a mother’s attention and perception also change. One aspect of motherhood—moving closer to the child’s perspective—gives everyday objects new meaning, and for a time, the entire home takes on a different map.
This is an original, one-of-a-kind oil painting, signed and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
