Plum Tree Row I. evokes a tree-lined stretch of a village street. The dark trunk of a robust plum tree in the foreground dominates the right side of the composition, while the street and a row of further trees emerge from fainter washes of ink behind it.
The freely flowing ink washes and bold lines do not aim to document the scene precisely but rather capture the atmosphere of a memory. The interplay of black, gray, and unpainted white areas conveys both the substantial weight of the old trees and the airy openness of the space between them.
I spent the summers of my childhood in my grandmother’s village. For me, village life was intertwined with a sense of freedom: bathing in the stream, wandering through the fields, and living in harmony with the rhythm of the landscape. The fruit trees lining the streets were just as much a part of this world as the gardens, the animals, and the daily physical labor.
In my Collective Heritage series, I revisit these early experiences and shared visual memories. The plum trees appear simultaneously as a real landscape feature and as guardians of a vanishing way of village life.
